City Government

Pittsburg has a Council/City Manager form of Government.  The City Council is composed of a Mayor and five members elected at-large for two-year terms.  They are the policy-making body of the City's government and set and adopt the annual budget for the City.

Regular Pittsburg City Council meetings are held on the second Monday of each month at 6:00 p.m. in the City Council Chambers, 200 Rusk Street. Special meetings are held when needed. Agendas are posted on the front window of City Hall and on this web site on the Friday preceding each meeting.

Mayor

Mayor Kennington is a native of Pittsburg.  Along with wife Amy and two daughters, Mayor Kennington is an active, involved member of the community.  His hobbies include fishing, gardening, and reading.                   
Upon completion of his education, Mayor Kennington has been Funeral Director at Erman Smith Funeral Home. He is a member of Pittsburg Rotary Club, has served eight years on the Pittsburg's Planning & Zoning Commission, and is active on several other Community boards.

City Council

Councilmember Burns grew up in Pittsburg and is a graduate of Texas Tech University.  He is happily married to Bulinda Burns, they have two sons Blevin and Bryce. Kendal and his family are members of First Baptist Church-Pittsburg.  He is President of Guaranty Bond Bank-Pittsburg and is a member of the Pittsburg City Council and Rotary Club.  Kendal is also a member of the Frank Sexton Masonic Lodge.

Councilmember Cook has been a Pittsburg/Camp County resident for 25 years. He is retired from the United States Air Force and the Pittsburg Police Department. He is a graduate of the Law Enforcement Management Institute of Texas Leadership and Command College. Mr. Cook is a singer who entertains at local nursing homes and assisted living centers. 

Councilmember Willis is a proud homegrown Camp County product.  He is a graduate of Wiley College located in Marshall, Texas.  Rico is married to Qiana Willis and they spend quality time raising their beautiful daughter, Kenly Willis.  He is currently the Director of Student Activities and Multicultural Affairs at Northeast Texas Community College.  Rico believes that community leaders are the key to building a strong community. Mr. Willis grew up benefiting from  the recources that the  City of Pittsburg had to offer; he takes pride in being able to give back to his hometown.

Councilmember Abernathy is a a fifth-generation resident of Pittsburg, is the son of the late D. H. Abernathy, who was mayor of Pittsburg for 52 years. He has a son, David H. E. Abernathy. He has served the citizens of Pittsburg and Camp County for most of his life. David has been a volunteer firefighter for over 47 years and was co-founder and 13-year president of Camp County EMS. He developed the first city/county emergency management plan and served as emergency management coordinator and as county fire marshal for over 30 years, without pay, and is a reserve deputy sheriff. David initiated our citizen emergency alerting system. He and his father built eight fire trucks for the city and county, donating their labor, and he has helped design four others. David is a trustee for the First United Methodist Church and for the Northeast Texas Rural Heritage Museum. He retired as an Assistant Chief with the Texas Forest Service, where he helped manage major disasters and events throughout the nation, including two Super Bowls, and provided training and assistance to a multitude of agencies including the Secret Service, FBI, FEMA and the Texas DPS. He was appointed by two Texas governors to the Texas Commission on Fire Protection. David is the owner of Abernathy Training and Consulting and sits on state and national public safety committees.
